Protecting Marriage, Family, and Society
The prophesies foretold by modern prophets in the Proclamation on the Family relative to the consequences for the deterioration of the family sometimes seem much more probable in my lifetime and likely to ensue much sooner.
Again, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has become involved in the moral issue marriage and same-sex marriage. The debate is heated in California, where a new ballot measure (Proposition 8) is slated for vote in November. This effects and outcome of this debate, subsequent vote, and law are not isolated to California. This moment is recognized as important by proponents of both sides of the issue, as it will set a precedent for what will follow.
Frankly, the possibilities are very, very significant. Again, the church has spoken of likely consequences and again outlined the very purpose of the family in a document called The Divine Institution of Marriage, found on newsroom.lds.org.
The gravity of the situation is well-established. It is important, and the situation is not pretty. The vote is likely to be close in California. Similar votes in Arizona and Florida are upcoming. I cannot deny that this growing national and global movement of thought and act is a sign of the times. Today and the years ahead will not be kind to the spiritually faint of heart. Entrenchment in the gospel of Jesus Christ is essential. I believe that Christ showed the way of happiness. Imposters may pantomime, but their pleasure is empty and ending. Daily devotion will become more important than ever to escape the influences of evil.
Even still, not all is yet gathered in for the last huddle. Those that desire to uphold righteousness and the life and society that accompanies good principles are still deployed throughout the world, charged to stand as lights on respective hills, encouraging others to accompany us toward our mutual goal: a better life in the end with our complete families in the presence of God.
